wherefore your petitioners pray

FULL PETITION TEXT Following is the full text of the petition that is being circulated on Rarotonga. This is the second petition to start against the Unit Titles Bill, the first being in Aitutaki. Both will be presented to parliament next week. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the Parliament of the Cook Islands Sheweth: That we bring to the notice of the Cook Islands Parliament that the following signatories oppose the introduction of the Unit Titles Bill in any form. The content of the Unit Titles Bill and its amendments will forever change the nature of Landownership in the Cook Islands to the detriment of the People of the Cook Islands. The Unit Titles Bill will grant Real Estate ownership rights to Foreign Investors and endow Foreigners with the capacity to trade in Real Estate in the Cook Islands. This is a direct contradiction of the current land tenure laws that have protected our shores from ownership of property in the Cook Islands by Foreigners. The signatories to this Petition oppose any changes to the current Landownership Laws of the Cook Islands. Further, that the current legislation and other legal means such as lease agreements sufficiently equip investors with legal title to the use of lands in the Cook Islands. Wherefore your Petitioners pray that the Parliament defeat the Unit Titles Bill and any other legislation that alters Landownership Laws. Further, given the nature and gravity of the Unit Titles Bill your Petitioners pray that the Honourable members at least delay the passing into law of the Unit Titles Bill so the true opposition to the Bill can be gauged. We the undersigned solemnly declare that we are eligible voters of the Cook Islands over the age of 18 years and this is the only signing of this Petition. Seems like making a mountain out a a molehill. The only thing it does is enable the creation of leases of airpace.

There is a huge difference between freehold and leasehold. Someone is causing mischief by saying that the unit titles act is going to freehold land to foreigners when this is not the case. the unit titles are just leases, those investors are just tenants that are going to use their own money to improve our lands, pay rent and give it all back at the end of the lease
