> less than one week to go

MEDIA COMMENT One week to go to the start of the 2006 hurricane season on Wednesday 1st November next week. No sign, however, that we have learnt anything from lessons of last year - namely the need for the free, fast and independent news media to monitor emerging disasters. It reflects poorly on media and other leaders when an island like Pukapuka can be smashed apart and still nothing is done more than a year and a half later. Could be so much better. Already, police have picked up on media suggestions to start a small boat registry. Question is, has the registry been updated yet? Or will authorities wait until the media rings up again?
